It all started in 431 B.C. between Sparta and Athens when the Spartans wanted to fight a land war, which they were extremely good at. They outnumbered the Athenians two-to-one odds, they believed that the Athenians could only stand up to them for a very short time. At the outbreak of the war the Spartans invaded Attica and burned the Athenians crops to starve the Athenians until they gave up. Athens had a strong navy, Pericles knew that they could put up a fight against the Spartans using the tribute money from the empire.
